In 2003 a Scottish band came up with the best name ever: “We Were Promised Jetpacks”.
In 2009 they wrote some pretty decent songs and released a sweet little album called: “These Four Walls” which features 11 tracks with lyrics sung in that Scottish accent that most of us wish we could have.
Above is the beautiful sound of their track: “It’s Thunder and It’s Lightning”.
The guitar is gripping. It’ll keep you listening through the lengthy intro. When Andy Thompson starts singing girls will get wet. I wish I was Scottish right now. Fuck. Back to the music, the slow build peaks and fades with ooohs and ahhhs, bells and chimes and then it slows, before a little drumroll kicking your soul into a place it never knew it could go. Andy’s screaming is probably the first thing that’s given me the chills since Saw. It’s almost like Snow Patrol with more temper and emotions. Sure the lyrics about abuse might bring you down like a busy Monday after a great weekend but when you turn the volume up in your headphones and let your mind get lost in the totally comprehensible mess you’ll feel way more at peace with yourself than you thought possible. The band paints a picture of a storm even without the words. The riding snare give it direction, the chimes help it hover and the guitar chord build up lets your heart beat again. The worst part about this song is that it ends.
It’s raw, it’s rough and it’s great.
